Julia's Wish

Julia While most wish recipients are dreaming of tropical retreats, a new plasma television, or meeting their favorites celebrities, Julia Feinberg, 17, wanted her wish to make a lasting impact. Julia, a junior at Friends' Central, has Spinal Muscular Atrophy, Type II, a disease that requires her to use a wheelchair. Not knowing if she was eligible for a wish, Julia contacted Make-A-Wish Foundation to find out. After review and approval by the Foundation, Julia was deemed eligible for a wish and set out to determine what she wanted.

At first she dreamed about flying in space or spending a weekend at the White House, but security reasons prohibited those from happening. After months of seriously contemplating her wish she realized she wanted to do something that was lasting and would have the most impact. Stated Julia, "I have a great life, great family and friends and I didn't feel it would be fair to take the wish for myself. I've always been passionate about confronting the AIDS epidemic in Africa. My teacher did an assembly that included a presentation of the Firelight Foundation that caught my interest. It's a grass roots organization providing grants for the community to work together to serve children affected by HIV/AIDS in Africa."

Kerry Olson, Founder and President of Firelight Foundation commented on Julia's gift: "Julia's wish is to make a difference in the lives of children orphaned and affected by HIV/AIDS in Africa. Out of her own remarkable sense of caring, Julia is passing her gift on to some of the world's most vulnerable children, and in turn, she is helping to fulfill their wish for a brighter future. Firelight is honored and inspired by Julia's generosity and initiative. She serves as a great example to us all!"

"As the average value of a wish is $6500, Make-A-Wish Foundation sent a $6500 check made payable to the Firelight Foundation on behalf of Julia. There are occasions when we are touched by a child or teen who gives away his/her wish, Julia is an example of a gracious, selfless young lady who understands there are those less fortunate than herself." remarked Karen Traten, Director of Development.
